Why your screen door breaks so frequently

Screen doors are frequently the most extensively used doors in the house. Moreover, they are frequently the most inferiorly designed doors, so it is not that surprising that these doors have a tendency to break on a daily basis.

What do I mean when I say inferiorly designed? Take for instance your front door. It’s very frequently solid wood, almost two inches dense. It is glued together and also have strong mortise and tenon joinery. Even your sliding patio door has dense tempered glass, surrounded by a dense aluminum frame that is screwed together. On the contrary, the screen door is frequently only held together at the corners by nothing more than friction and the support provided by the flexible screen mesh. The screen cloth gets looser and the corner get worn out until there is no longer any friction holding them together. This is when your screen door starts giving you issues.

The very first thing that happens when a screen door gets loose is that it can no longer hold its rectangular shape. You pull on it and the entire frame distorts and jams itself against the track. How can you tell if the frame is loose? Go outside and hold the door in position at the bottom with your foot. Grab both the sides of the screen door if possible. Try to gently move it left to right without removing your foot. Is it simple to move the top of the door while the bottom stays fixed? Do the vertical rails feel loose when you move them? If so, then your screen door is possibly depreciated and the end of its life.

If the frame passes the test above and is in good condition, you should then check the rollers. A screen door usually comes with a couple of rollers on the top and two rollers at the bottom. They are frequently adjusted up and down by the screws located in the bottom and at the top of the vertical rails. With the passage of time, the nylon rollers break and sometimes fall off completely.  Don’t try to lubricate the rollers even after they are worn out. You don’t require grease at all. The rollers should turn freely and the door should need no effort to glide right and left. Get the rollers replaced or look for screen door repair in Gold Coast.

You may take the screen door to a local shop and replace all the rollers and the corners and the screen cloth. But also then, if the frame itself is worn and not that strong, the repair may still not work. It is frequently better to take the two decade old screen door and replace it completely with one which has a denser, stronger and extruded aluminum frame.

Take the hassle to get a new screen door that is apparently stronger than the old one. The cost is not too much and a quality door will last for another two decades.
